Bouwend Nederland \ Rijkswaterstaat innovates: working more safely along the road with the Go-Barry

Based on the safety motto 'Everyone safe at home every day', Rijkswaterstaat (RWS) is working with the market to find effective solutions to make road work safer. The Go-Barry is a good example of this. RWS played an important role in the development and realization of this 'self-driving crash barrier'.

Go-Barry is a dynamic and intelligent barrier that can replace static barriers, beacons and cones. The barrier is on caterpillar tracks, is radio-controlled and retains its vehicle-retaining effect during movement. Thijs Hagedoorn, head foreman at Boskalis, came up with the Go-Barry. Jack Kusters, Sr. Advisor Integrated Safety in GPO/PPO Projects at RWS immediately saw the potential. “Safety of road workers and road users is a priority at RWS. So the holes were in the ceiling, that's how high we jumped in the air when we heard about this invention.” He and a number of colleagues took action two years ago to literally and figuratively help the Go-Barry get started. Now there is a prototype that will be used in ten pilot projects. Our former chairman Maxime Verhagen previously saw with his own eyes that it is dangerous on the side of the road. Watch the video here.
